Form 1040 History
About Form 1040 History
Form 1040 is the standard US individual income tax return. The first Form 1040 was introduced in 1913 when the income tax was established. The original form was 3 pages long with 1 page of instructions. By 2024, the basic Form 1040 has been simplified to 2 half pages, but the instructions span over 100 pages and there are dozens of schedules and attachments. The number 1040 is a relic of the sequential numbering system used by the Bureau of Internal Revenue in 1913. The form has been redesigned multiple times, most recently in 2018 when the TCJA simplified the main form to fit on a postcard sized sheet. Despite this simplification, most taxpayers must attach multiple schedules. The complexity of Form 1040 and its associated schedules is the primary reason Americans use tax preparation software and professionals.
