About Panama Papers

The Panama Papers were 11.5 million documents leaked from the Panamanian law firm Mossack Fonseca in 2016. The documents revealed how wealthy individuals and politicians used offshore companies to evade taxes. The leak implicated 12 current and former world leaders, including the Prime Minister of Iceland Sigmundur Gunnlaugsson, who resigned. Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was disqualified from office. The documents showed that Mossack Fonseca had created over 214,000 offshore entities. The Panama Papers demonstrated that tax evasion through offshore structures was systematic and global. The investigation involved over 370 journalists in 80 countries. The leak led to criminal investigations worldwide and over 90 countries requesting information from Panama.
