About Pelosi Stock Trading

The STOCK Act of 2012 prohibited members of Congress from using nonpublic information for personal investment. Despite this law, members of Congress have consistently outperformed the stock market. A 2022 study found that Congress members stock trades outperformed the market by 20 percent annually. Speaker Nancy Pelosi and her husband Paul were frequently cited, with timely trades in technology stocks. Public outrage led to proposals to ban stock trading by Congress members and their spouses. A 2022 bill proposed by a bipartisan group would have required members and families to put assets in blind trusts or divest. The bill did not pass. Similar concerns apply to executive branch officials and Federal Reserve officials, several of whom resigned after disclosure of stock trades during the pandemic.
