Plastic taxes aim to reduce plastic waste and encourage recycling. The UK Plastic Packaging Tax, launched in 2022, charges 200 per ton on plastic packaging containing less than 30 percent recycled content. Spain introduced a plastic tax in 2023. The EU is developing a plastic tax as part of its green transition. The EU plastic contribution is calculated based on the amount of non recycled plastic packaging waste. Several US states have considered plastic taxes or fees. The revenue is typically used for environmental cleanup and recycling infrastructure. Critics argue plastic taxes are difficult to administer and may lead to increased use of alternative materials with their own environmental impacts. The effectiveness of plastic taxes is still being evaluated.
