Stamp Act Liberty
About Stamp Act Liberty
The Sons of Liberty were organized in 1765 to resist the Stamp Act. The group was founded in Boston by Samuel Adams and John Hancock and spread to other colonies. The Sons of Liberty used intimidation, violence, and propaganda to resist British taxation. They organized demonstrations, burned tax officials in effigy, and destroyed the homes of officials. Stamp distributor Andrew Oliver was forced to resign publicly. Lieutenant Governor Thomas Hutchinson had his Boston mansion sacked and his library destroyed. The Sons of Liberty organized boycotts of British goods, reducing British imports by 25 percent. The name Sons of Liberty came from a speech in Parliament by Isaac Barre defending the colonists. The organization evolved into the leadership of the American Revolution.
