About Tax Day April 15

April 15 has been the deadline for filing US federal income tax returns since 1955. Before 1955, the deadline was March 15. The date was moved to give taxpayers more time. When April 15 falls on a weekend or holiday, the deadline moves to the next business day. Tax Day is a stressful day for millions of Americans. Post offices traditionally stayed open late on April 15 to accommodate last minute filers, though electronic filing has reduced this. Tax Day protests have become common, with groups using the date to call for tax reform. The Tea Party movement held its first protests on Tax Day 2009. Several countries have different tax filing systems, with some offering pre filled returns to simplify filing.
