About Tax Preparation Industry
The US tax preparation industry generates over 14 billion annually. Intuit, the maker of TurboTax, is the largest company. H&R Block, Jackson Hewitt, and Liberty Tax Service operate thousands of retail locations. The industry has lobbied intensely against simplification of the tax code and against IRS provided free filing. Intuit spent millions lobbying against return free filing, where the IRS would calculate taxes for simple returns. ProPublica exposed how Intuit deliberately hid its Free File program from search engines. The industry argues that it provides valuable services and that government provided filing would conflict with private enterprise. The IRS Direct File pilot, launched in 2024, represents the first significant government tax filing service, covering simple returns in 12 states.
