About Tourist Tax

Tourist taxes are levied on visitors to fund tourism infrastructure and manage overtourism. Venice introduced a 5 entry fee in 2024 for day trippers. Barcelona charges a tourist tax that was increased in 2023. Amsterdam has among the highest tourist taxes at 12.5 percent of hotel rate. Japan introduced an international tourist tax of 1,000 yen in 2019. Bhutan charges a 200 daily sustainable development fee, raised from 65 in 2022. Tourist taxes are generally well accepted by local residents but opposed by the tourism industry. The revenue is used for infrastructure, cultural preservation, and environmental protection. Post pandemic overtourism has returned to many destinations, increasing interest in tourist taxes as a management tool.
